DIARY

DAYS 1 - 5

DAY 1

Left about 5.35 a.m from Summerstrand, P.E.  Had breakfast in Cradock. Went via Hofmeyr. Had to refuel. Nigel said he had a range of "0" on his fuel guage! Not a promising start!! Went through Bloemfontein and refuelled up tanks again.

Stopped in Bultfontein for coffee.  Nigel said he drank his coffee standing up due to a sore butt!!

Arrived in Klerksdorp at around 5. Decided to stop over here for the night. Phoned from the Spur while enjoying a cold Castle! Went to bed before 9.

DAY 2

Left Klerksdorp just before 6 and were in Thabazimbi.

DAY 3

We are now 2281km from home. Left Francistown this morning and travelled to Nata and then onto the Chobe National Park. This was about 560 km today! We were able to throw something into the Zambezi river, we were that close. It was raining (very welcome!), and the river was flowing quite strongly.

On route we visited the Makgadigadi Pans, and drove about 10km into the Pan. Very exciting riding as the Pans were wet.

From there it was another 300km of straight road with loads of potholes. Saw elephant droppings but unfortunately no ellies!”

We leave tomorrow... we go across the river by Ferry into Zambia, and then on to Vic Falls. Can't wait!

DAY 4

We crossed into Zambia by ferry, which only took a few minutes.... Spent about 2 hours at the border post though, filling in reams and reams of documents... Are in Livingstone now, at a backpackers place called Fawlty Towers! Are off to see the Falls this afternoon.

Victoria Falls

Had a great day in Livingstone. Had the bikes washed as they were full of salty mud from the pans. We did a 15 minute helicopter flight over the Vic Falls which was spectacular, then we visited the Falls by bike. The Falls were incredible as the Zambezi is flowing at full force, and we got drenched. Lots of tourists around.

Victoria Falls

Tomorrow we will be heading north to Lusaka which is 572km away.”

DAY 5

Left Fawlty Towers after a bacon and egg breakfast... Headed for Lusaka. The first approximately 60km were the worst roads we had seen... huge potholes! We had to ride about 60km/h for most of that. However, after that stretch, we encountered the best roads we had had!!! Great ride over 572km to Lusaka. We all complained of sore arses today! Found a photo shop where we transferred some photos from (Nigel's) phone via bluetooth to the owner's phone. He then transferred it to his computer and e-mailed them home for us... This was the only way we were able to do it, and hope you got the photos. We are not sure if we will be able to send anymore this way. The photos were of us crossing the Zambezi river by ferry, Fawlty Towers, and one of the magnificent Falls! The people are all so friendly.

Victoria Falls as seen from the helicopter

Spending the night at Pioneer Camp, 20km north of Lusaka. Tomorrow we leave and travel to the most northerly point of our trip, Chipata.
