| One of South
Africa's leading towns showing off the Art Nouveau style architecture. This results from
the strong links Port Elizabeth had with European heritage. Many buildings display
intricate stonework, wrought iron and stained glass windows. Some houses in Cape Road show
off a combination of Art Nouveau and Colonial styles. Also,
some marvellous examples of Cape Dutch style architecture are present with gables and the
timber finish (not only in Port Elizabeth but throughout the Eastern Cape). These
buildings are influenced to a degree by Dutch architecture, however the Cape Dutch style
is unique to South Africa. |
